How a spectrometer works
A spectrometer converts complex optical radiation into an ordered record of intensity versus wavelength.
The optical path step by step
Light enters through the input optics and reaches a dispersive element such as a diffraction grating. Different wavelengths are directed to different detector positions. Electronics read the signal and software applies the instrument response.
What affects the result?
Spectral range and resolution, stray light, linearity, noise, integration time, temperature stability and calibration all matter. L22 is developing its own spectrometer and will publish verified specifications after approval.
Frequently asked questions
What is a spectrometer used for?
It measures the distribution of radiation versus wavelength and can determine derived quantities within its intended use.
Can a spectrometer measure colour?
Colourimetric quantities can be calculated from a spectrum when measurement and calibration meet the method requirements.
